As full a view as I could get of the buffet. There are doors on each side, and three drawers down the center. That is one, long drawer at the top, ending at the vertical ridges on each side. The top drawer would be for silver ware, the others could hold linen or other accessories. The buffet measures 72" long, by about 23" deep, and 40" high. The backboard is about 4-1/2" high in the center. A couple of 1" to 2" long knicks in the varnish are visible at the bottom left of the top large drawer, and at the top right of the bottom large drawer.

This shows the inside of the right-hand door. The one on the left is, of course, identical. Between them, lots of serving dishes can be stored.

Close-up view of most significant damage to any of these pieces. Whatever someone set on here had to be scalding hot. The entire area seen here is not that badly damaged, it is more stained. However, just to the right of the reflection is a dollar-bill sized spot where the finish is actually roughed up. This is located close to the small backboard, and is about halfway between the center and right edge. This will be the most difficult area to repair/restore. I was never in a position where I could ask a restorer about it, and contented myself with using a "dresser" scarf on the top, or by placing a show-piece dish of some sort on top of it. (Call me lazy, or cheap.)

The "captain's" chair and one side chair. All chairs have their original mohair upholstery.

The other four side chairs.
Chair measurements: Each side chair--44-1/2" high chair backs, approx. 21" high at the seats, and the seats are 21" wide by 18" deep. The Captain's chair--chair-back height and seat height, same as side chairs, but the seat width is 23" and is 24" wide at the front of the arms, and the seat is 20-1/2" deep.

Back view of one of the side chairs.

I never noticed this before, and just noticed it when I was measuring the chairs today (Friday, September 26, 2003), so decided I'd better include a shot and description. This wooden portion is between the seat and back of each chair, as seen clearly in all of the full-chair shots. Each of the chairs has this edge seriously worn, on the same side, and some have similar marks on the piece on the other side. This is most prevalent on the five side chairs, but exists to a lesser degree on the captain's chair. It's almost as if workmen wearing toolbelts used the chairs, and one or more of the tools rubbed against these pieces while the person sat in the chair!?
