Antique Philco Model 96 Radio

Antique Philco Model 96 Radio

A beautiful piece from the days when furniture and appliances had style, were made from real wood and were well decorated—not the boring, black plastic stuff we see currently in vogue.

I believe this particular design was made in 1930. At that time, a radio (AM only) required an outside antennae—a wire strung several feet high between poles several dozen yards apart—in order to pick up all but the closest stations.

When I last used this, about 1986-87, I could pick up a local station that was located about one mile away. That station closed, and there is no other local AM station. The point is, to the best of my knowledge, this radio works!

The cabinet is in very good condition. Although the finish is slightly worn in a few spots, it is surface wear only and should be easily refinished or restored. That is, there are no deep scratches or gouges. It has all four of the original knobs.

The fabric speaker cover is also original, but has been damaged as shown in the increasingly close close-ups (last three photos). I can't swear to this, but I believe someone skilled with needle and thread might be able to mend the fabric.

Although dusty, the insides are shown in one photo, and the original label, pasted inside, is shown in another.

Measurements: 38.5" H x 26.25" W x 13.25" D.

Packing, pick-up, and shipping must be arranged and paid by purchaser. I will attempt to assist the successful purchaser any way that I can to arrange the shipping.

I recently (Friday, July 20, 2007) did a Google search, and the radios I found that were unrestored make this one look like a museum piece. Also, I ran across a site that sells fabric that could be used for replacing the speaker cover fabric on this radio if you are unable to repair with needle and thread.
