Was completed in 1897 at a cost of over $6,000,000. This Library is here seen from the Capitol. The dome and lantern are finished in black copper, with panels gilded with thick coating of gold leaf; and the cresting of the dome terminates in a gilded finial representing the torch of science ever burning.

The beautiful assembly room is entirely in white with crimson hangings, the colors of the Red Cross. The structure of white marble cost $800,000. Description: The First Division Monument, a beautiful white granite shaft surmounted with a gold statue of Victory, by Daniel Chester French, was erected to commemorate the heroic deeds of the First Division, A.E.F., in the World War. It was erected by the Memorial Association of the First Division and its friends. The building in the background is the War and State Departments. (This building is now the "Old Executive Office Building", which is directly west of the White House.)
